India’s biotechnology sector is rapidly emerging as a key driver of economic and technological growth, contributing nearly 5% of the global biotech market. The major segments include vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, and agricultural biotechnology, with biopharma leading the industry. India has established itself as a global bio-manufacturing hub, supplying around 60% of the worldwide demand for DPT, BCG, and measles vaccines.

Government initiatives such as the National Biotechnology Development Strategy (NBDS) 2021–2025 have further accelerated growth by creating a facilitative ecosystem for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Biotechnology in India not only addresses challenges in healthcare but also contributes to environmental sustainability, food security, and sustainable farming practices. The sector has also witnessed a surge in biotech startups and is generating substantial employment opportunities across healthcare, agriculture, and industrial applications through the efforts of key bodies like the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Recognizing the high demand for skilled human resources in biotechnology, the college established the Department of Biotechnology in 2005. The department offers B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in Biotechnology, affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University. Over the past 20 glorious years the department has been dedicated to imparting high-quality education in biotechnology.

As an autonomous department, the curriculum for both B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biotechnology is meticulously designed to provide students with a strong foundation of theoretical concepts alongside extensive hands-on laboratory experience. The department is led by a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members, who are not only excellent teachers but also active researchers. This ensures that students receive a truly world-class teaching and learning experience, preparing them to contribute effectively to the dynamic and evolving field of biotechnology.
