About the Department

The ‘Department of Performing Arts’ of Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Autonomous), Shivajinagar, Pune-5 was formally inaugurated by Pt. Sanjeev Abhyankar on 17th Oct 2023. The department currently offers Bachelors course in Music (B.A. Music) within the NEP structure, an online ‘Certificate course in Music Appreciation’ along with Hobby classes in Bharatanatyam, Harmonium, Violin, Tabla and Sugam Sangeet. In a very short span of 2.5 years, the department has become very popular amongst the students, catering to almost 100 students across the Major, Minor and Open Elective verticals of the NEP structure. The department tries to strike a balance between the traditional performing arts pedagogy and the contemporary sensibilities of the young creative minds. Apart from providing professional training in Hindustani vocal and instrumental music, we aim to provide our students with a strong foundation in music, necessary for pursuing a career in any music-related fields like stage performance, sound recording, sound editing, music composing, music arrangement, music design, music education as well as further studies/research in music.

Located in the new building of the college, the department has ample space for conducting theory and practical classes. With a well-structured syllabus designed with the aim of imbibing not just the theoretical and practical aspects of music but also the overall culture and ecosystem of the music world, the department has a highly qualified faculty that employs innovative pedagogy involving formal instruction, demonstrations, interactive sessions, guided listening and engaging solo/group project work. The department regularly conducts guest lectures, workshops and seminars by eminent national and international artists, Gurus and scholars, in-house concerts, collaborative events and has access to a well-equipped, acoustically treated modern auditorium.
