Introduction
Microbiology: A World Beyond the Visible
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, tiny yet powerful entities that form the foundation of life. It is one of the most significant branches of science, offering deep insights into the principles of life and evolution through the exploration of diverse microbial systems. Though rooted in basic science, Microbiology is truly multidisciplinary. Its diverse branches such as Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Virology, Environmental Microbiology (Air, Water, Soil), Agricultural and Food Microbiology, Dairy Microbiology, Space Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Fermentation Technology have a profound and lasting impact on human life. Together, they contribute to making our planet a healthier and better place to live.
About the Department :
The Department of Microbiology was established in 2005, with the undergraduate program(B.Sc. Microbiology) commencing in the same year, followed by the postgraduate program (M.Sc. Microbiology) in 2006. Since its inception, the department has envisioned nurturing and creating highly skilled human resources in the field of Microbiology. The department is recognized as a Research Center in Microbiology by Savitribai Phule Pune University for Ph.D. Microbiology programs. In addition, a skill development course entitled ‘Pharmaceutical Techniques’ is offered, along with a wide array of co-curricular activities designed to ensure the holistic development of students.
Faculty and Research :
The department is enriched with qualified faculty members possessing extensive academic expertise and significant research experience. Both faculty and students have actively contributed to the field, with their research articles published in reputed peer-reviewed national and international journals. Over the years, the department has developed strong academic and research collaborations with prestigious institutions and organizations such as NCL, ARI, NIV, NARI, IISER, NCCS, MCC, Ayurveda Rasashala, National Toxicology Center, Modern College of Pharmacy, Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd., and Hindustan antibiotics. It also maintains active associations with professional bodies including the Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), Pune Unit, and the Microbiology Society of India(MBSI).
Publications and Patents :
Till now 45 research papers are published from Department of Microbiology and 5 patents are granted. Currently two patents are filed by the Department.

The department has an excellent track record of placing students in esteemed research institutes, industries, and healthcare sectors. Beyond academics, it also emphasizes social responsibility by organizing a variety of outreach and awareness activities to highlight the crucial role of the microbial world in human health, industry, and environmental sustainability.
