Established in 1975, the Department of Geography has been dedicated to providing high-quality education and fostering an engaging and effective learning environment. From the outset, undergraduate programs in Geography (BA and BSc) were offered at a specialized level. Postgraduate courses (MA and MSc) were introduced in 1993, further expanding academic opportunities. In 2023, the department was recognized as a research center by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), allowing it to offer a wide range of programs and provide comprehensive support to research scholars.

The academic unit actively collaborates with esteemed organizations such as the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to offer off-campus online certification courses in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These partnerships enhance its academic outreach and provide students and scholars with access to cutting-edge tools and knowledge.

Its facilities are equipped with modern technologies that support practical learning and research. These include LCD-equipped lecture halls, a computer laboratory with Wi-Fi connectivity, the latest mapping and GIS software, surveying instruments, and an extensive collection of maps from the Survey of India (SOI), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the Ordnance Survey (OS). Additional resources such as wall maps, globes, a dedicated library, and a research lab create an enriched environment for both students and researchers.

The faculty actively encourages students and scholars to pursue advanced studies and research in geography and related disciplines while upholding the highest standards of ethics and academic integrity. Its reputation for academic excellence and a supportive atmosphere attracts students from across the country and abroad. Experienced instructors are committed to developing students’ practical and analytical skills in areas such as cartography, geo-informatics, surveying, management, statistical analysis, and other relevant fields.
