Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Shivajinagar, Pune-5, established in 1970 by the Progressive Education Society (founded in 1934), stands as a distinguished institution in Maharashtra’s higher education landscape. Rooted in the guiding principle ‘ज्ञानमयोभव’ (Dnyanmayo Bhav) – “Be Knowledge Incarnate” – our college upholds the vision of its founding members by embodying the ideals of being truly ‘Modern’ and ‘Progressive’ in every sense.
As the very first college founded by the Progressive Education Society, Modern College has grown from modest beginnings into a leading academic institution. Now in its 56th year, we continue our pursuit of excellence in academics, research, performing arts, sports, and community engagement, aspiring to reach even greater heights.
In its early years, the college offered undergraduate programs in Arts, Commerce, and Science. A significant milestone was achieved in 1994 with the successful introduction of postgraduate courses. Further affirming its commitment to quality education, the college earned NAAC accreditation in 2003, followed by re-accreditation with an ‘A’ grade in 2010.
Permanently affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), the college is recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act. We offer a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across disciplines including Arts, Science, Commerce, Computer Science, Business Administration, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Animation and Performing Arts. Our eleven SPPU-approved Research Centres further promote an environment of advanced academic inquiry.
Modern College is committed not just to academic excellence but also to the holistic development of students through co-curricular and extracurricular activities. In the realm of sports, the college has consistently excelled and proudly received the ‘Best Sports College Award’ from SPPU for eight consecutive years.
Our alumni represent a wide spectrum of accomplished individuals—national and international sportspersons, defence and civil service officers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, artists, musicians, filmmakers, and thought leaders—who continue to make meaningful contributions to society.
A hallmark of our inclusive campus is our commitment to accessibility. We have installed an ‘Audio Notice Board’ and a dedicated Computer Lab for Visually Impaired Students, ensuring equal participation in campus life for all.
Academic and administrative excellence is further driven by the active role of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). With state-of-the-art infrastructure—well-equipped classrooms, modern laboratories, a comprehensive library, gymkhana, and an assembly hall—our college provides an enriching learning environment.
All the departments organized several events, fests and workshops with active participation of the students. The NSS and NCC Units also showed excellence through organizing and participation in various activities. The college has also established an Institutional Innovation Council (IIC), a Ministry of Education initiative, to promote awareness about start-ups, entrepreneurship, and innovation among students. Through IIC, numerous activities have been conducted, igniting the spirit of innovation in our young minds.
Our faculty members, with unwavering dedication, continue to maintain high academic standards while meeting the demands of modern education. Their adaptability was particularly evident during the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which the college adopted from the academic year 2023-24. In 2024-25, we successfully implemented an upgraded version of the NEP, including the in-house development and offering of a Generic IKS MOOC course for all first-year students.
Managing the curriculum patterns of two NEP versions was a significant challenge. This complex task was efficiently handled through the collective efforts of our Vice Principals, Heads of Departments, and teaching staff, whose enthusiasm and commitment deserve special appreciation.
I extend heartfelt thanks to our non-teaching staff and housekeeping personnel, who play a vital role in maintaining cleanliness and sanitization across the campus, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
We remain grateful to the authorities of Progressive Education Society, particularly Prof. Dr. Gajanan R. Ekbote, Chairman, Business Council, P.E.Society for his visionary leadership and continuous encouragement. We are confident that through his able guidance, our college will continue progressing in all possible ways.
We are thankful to Dr. A. K. Pande, Deputy Chariman, P.E.Society; Prof. Dr. Mrs. Jyotsna G. Ekbote, Joint Secretary, P.E.Society and Chairperson of College Development Committee and Prof. Shamkant Deshmukh, Secretary of P.E.Society for their unwavering support, guidance, encouragement and active involvement.
With their guidance, Modern College will continue to thrive, along with the entire network of institutions under the aegis of the Progressive Education Society.
With personal regards,
