About Department
Name of the Department: Department of German
Year of Establishment: 2001
Name of Head of the Department: Prof. Sneha Mahajan
The Department of German is the only foreign language department of Modern College, offering global exposure and international opportunities to its students. It offers undergraduate courses in German, with a curriculum designed in accordance with the NEP 2020 guidelines.
German was first introduced in the Junior College in 1976, later extended to the Senior Wing of Commerce in 2001, and to the Arts Faculty in 2009. Since then, the department has grown steadily. In 2015, it received approval from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to introduce German as a special subject at the B.A. level.
A landmark agreement was signed between Modern College and PASCH – “Schools: Partners for the Future”, a global initiative of the German Ministry of Education, on 22nd April 2009. Modern College is one of only 1,000 institutions worldwide selected for this initiative. Under this agreement, teachers and students benefit from multiple opportunities to enhance their German language learning. The department is also an active member of BKD, Goethe-Institut Pune, InDaF, and DAAD.
The department takes great pride in its students, many of whom have represented the college at national and international platforms. Notably, Prachi Atre, Aditi Jagdale, and Ashwami Patil received the prestigious DAAD Scholarship to attend a language course at Humboldt University, Berlin, in June 2016.
Alongside its regular courses, the department also offers add-on German language programs to further enrich student learning.
