Introduction

The department of Psychology, Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Shivajinagar Pune 05, was established in the year 1971 under the guidance of Dr. Shamala S.Vanarase who served as its head until 1979. Then after it was headed by Mrs. Sudha A, Shaligram until 1998 .At present the department is under the able leadership of Dr. Amruta S.Oke.

In 1991 the department took initiative in starting Counseling Centre which provides psychological assistance to students, non-teaching and teaching staff of Modern College. Counseling cases including personal counseling, aptitude testing, career guidance, group counseling, etc are also dealt with expert’s guidance.

In 2006, the post graduate section was established. Ours is also the first college in Pune to offer specialization in Counseling Psychology. M.A. in Clinical Psychology was initiated in 2009. At present ours is the largest post- graduate department of Psychology affiliated to SPPU, Pune having in- take capacity of 48; comprising two divisions.

The department of Psychology has laboratory set up according to the stated norms. It includes eight cubicles and discussion hall. The department is equipped with 3 classrooms, one fully furnished cabin for the HOD, a separate cabin for faculty members. The department also has hi-tech projector facilities, laptops, computers and internet facilities for the staff and the students.

The department has purchased 148 standardized Psychological tests; and 35 psychological instruments for experimentation purpose. The department also has licensed copies of ‘I AM’ software of aptitude testing which is beneficial for career counseling.

Department has maintained a departmental library with 78 books which are   donated by students and staff, these books are available for students. In the college library there are 450 Psychology books that cost INR 3, 12,955/-.

Department conducts various curricular and Co-curricular activities like workshops on important psychological topics, Teachers Day Celebration, seminars ,Guest lecturers, Regular Interaction with  the alumni, Psych Film Club, Parents Meetings, Remedial Teaching for students, Educational visits and tours, Psychological exhibitions, Presentations of students on various topics, Essay and Quiz competitions etc.

Department has Competent, dynamic, and approachable faculty members. Apart from teaching, they are engaged in research, curricular & co- curricular activities.

From Department, there has been a history of university rankers in Psychology. Apart from academics, students of the department have excelled in the field of sports, drama, literature, debates, music and social work etc. Some of the students have participated and won in many state/national/international level sports competitions. Some have also won awards for performances in dramas and other cultural activities.

Students of the department have also made their mark in NCC and NSS programs. Some of the students are pursuing higher education in National/international universities. Some are settled in and working with institutes abroad. Some of our past students have qualified for NET / SET and are working as lecturers and assistant professors in well known institutions.

Stuents are encouraged to attend National, International seminars and present, publish papers in and out of Maharashtra and won prizes. Under-graduate and post-graduate students undertake research projects and participate in competitions like Avishkar. Students present research papers at State/National level seminars/conferences every year.

Mukundan( Institute of Behavioural Science, Gujarat Forensic Sciences University), Dr. Shobhana Abhyankar (Fergusson College, Pune), Dr.Radha  Sharma (Management Development Institute, Gurgaon), Dr.Anagha Lavlekar(JPIP, Pune), Dr.Kelkar Sandeep (Equip kids, Thane), Dr.Alka Wadkar(Dept. of Psychology, SPPU, Pune), Dr. B. R. Shejwal(HOD,Psychology Department, SPPU), Dr.Vidyadhar Watve(Eminent Psychiatrist), Dr.Ulhas Luktuke (Eminent Psychiatrist), Dr.Ram Takwale( Vice- Chancellore, SPPU)  .

The department is planning to start Research centre in Psychology and Diploma Course in industrial Psychology, also planning to publish an in-house journal every year (procedure for ISSN no. has already initiated).

  • Department organizes Counseling Camp every year as a part of the Neighbourhood Community Service. Students get hands on experience of counseling under the guidance of experienced faculty.
  • Department has an unique counselling centre wherein; personal as well as career & aptitude counselling services are provided regularly.
