The Department of English at Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce is one of its oldest departments, offering B.A. since 1970 and M.A. since 1990.

At the undergraduate level, the Department of English aims to enhance students’ employability skills and acquaint them with contemporary trends in English literature and language studies. It facilitates students’ active participation and shapes an analytical and critical mindset. This is achieved through various departmental activities such as seminars, guest lectures, presentations, workshops, industry academia meets and literary competitions. At graduate level the department offers a range of interdisciplinary courses. Some of the distinguished papers that the department offers include Bhakti Poetry, World Literature, skill oriented courses that aim to enhance English for professional, administrative and practical uses.

At the postgraduate level, the department offers a variety of courses: English Language and Literature across the years, English Language and Literature Teaching, Linguistics, Creative Writing, East Asian Studies, Women’s Writings in English, American Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Translation Studies, Indian Writing in English, Dalit Writings, Literary Retellings, and Literary Theory and Criticism.

The most singular feature of this department is its commitment towards the holistic growth of its students by revisiting the pedagogic practices for the students to learn and grow. Alongside, the department’s association with Language Industry offers students appropriate exposure. It prides itself on having a pool of extremely talented and creative students who are enthusiastic about academic and co-curricular activities. The department works to inculcate a spirit of collaboration and collegiality between faculty members and students, thus looking to achieve wholesome progress at all stages.
