Microbes are the ancestors of all living things and the support system for all other forms of life. As foundation of the biosphere and major determinants of human health, microbes claim a primary, fundamental role in life on earth. It has long been acknowledged that the functional diversity of the microbial world is staggering. The study of microbes is pivotal to the study of all living things. Newer discoveries pointing to the central importance of microbial life in unearthing various fundamental phenomena are being made everyday.
Microbiology is a field with multidisciplinary applications and this field has never been more exciting than it is today. In microbiology, the tools and techniques of genomics have an unprecedented power to enable the development of a new, predictive science. With more discoveries taking st place with leaps and bounds in Microbiology in the 21 centuries, we are being empowered with tools to understand the basic phenomena with precision and clarity. In this century, researchers are striving to join together the results of their work, moving to an integration of biological phenomena at all levels. The new face of Microbiology is faced with tumult of advancements, exploration, opportunities and challenges and is rapidly advancing to threshold of a new era.
